Although South Park was popularized by the similarly named animated series, it is actually the endpoint of one of our favorite fall drives in Colorado. Start in Conifer, 15 miles southwest of Denver, and continue along the Kenosha Pass with an elevation of around 10,000 feet for a full range of breathtaking sights, from the vibrant colors of the fall foliage and deep greens of pine and Douglas fir trees to grassland basins with unobstructed views of the Mosquito Range peaks. The journey ends around 54 miles in Fairplay, the largest town in the South Park valley.

Top of the Rockies National Scenic Byway

Featuring an elevation of 11,319 feet, the Top of the Rockies National Scenic Byway gives drivers a few options to view astonishing fall colors. Start at Copper Mountain and travel over Fremont Pass to Leadville. From there, you can take the route that leads you to Granite or select the route that loops back over the Tennessee Pass while taking in the sights of Camp Hale, Red Cliff, Minturn, and ending in Vail Valley. Although you’ll encounter some bumpy roads as you take CO 119 to County Road 130 toward Eldora, you’ll be rewarded with dense aspen woodland and a shimmering lake and creek. If you’re itching to stretch your legs after the nine-mile fall drive in Colorado, the trailhead is the starting point of incredible day hiking destinations like the Arapaho Pass and Diamond Lake hikes.

The West Elk Loop Over Kebler Pass

If you want to take in the full gamut of Mother Nature’s color palette, add the Kebler Pass to your fall drives in Colorado. Although the complete historic byway loop takes about six to eight hours to travel the full 205 miles, drivers can still experience some of the most iconic fall views crossing the 30-mile Kebler Pass between Crested Butte and Paonia. Along the way, you’ll travel through the towns of Crested Butte, Gunnison, Montrose, and Carbondale and experience the beauty of rolling meadows, cottonwood trees, rivers, polished stones, and orchards.
