Hybrid vs. Plug-in Hybrid vs. EV: Differences

So, what are the differences between a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid? Is it a plug-in hybrid and EV? If you’re shopping for an eco-friendly vehicle, you’ll need to be able to differentiate a hybrid from a plug-in hybrid and EV, so you can find the right vehicle for your needs. Take a moment to review the differences between the three major categories of eco-friendly cars below:

  • Hybrid: A hybrid vehicle features a gas combustion engine, but also relies on a battery pack and motor. The motor works to offset the stress on the gas engine as it generates power. This combination results in dramatically increased fuel economy numbers. No need to worry about charging the battery when driving a traditional hybrid, as it’s automatically recharged as you drive, thanks to your alternator and regenerative braking technologies.
  • Plug-in Hybrid: Plug-in hybrid vehicles work the same way as hybrid vehicles. However, they have a fully-dedicated electric mode that allows you to drive off battery power alone for between 10 and 30 miles. While you can always make use of hybrid mode, you will need to charge up your PHEV from time to time if you plan on using the dedicated electric mode. Still, it’s worth it. Driving a PHEV means you no longer need to burn gas when running errands around town. All the while, you’re not restricted by electric range limitations.
  • EV: These vehicles only rely on battery-powered electric motors to generate the torque that propels them. This means you can say goodbye to gas and oil changes entirely. While you’ll have to plug in and power up your EV, you can do most of your charging from home in your garage while you sleep. What’s more, public chargers are much faster than they used to be and they’re much more common. Also, EVs feature electric ranges that allow you to drive for hundreds of miles between charges.
