There are two SUBARU BOXER® engine options for the 2024 Subaru Outback, and each offers a different towing capacity. However, no matter which configuration you choose you’ll get standard all-wheel drive, a Lineartronic® CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), traction control, and more.

2.5L SUBARU BOXER® 4-Cylinder Engine

  • 2,700-Pound Towing Capacity
  • Standard on Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Limited, & Touring
  • 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque

2.4L Turbocharged SUBARU BOXER® 4-cylinder Engine

  • 3,500-Pound Towing Capacity
  • Standard on Onyx Edition XT, Wilderness, Limited XT, & Touring XT
  • 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque

Subaru Outback Towing Accessories

Your Subaru engine choice will determine your maximum capacity, but if you actually want to tow heavy cargo, you’re going to need to equip a few accessories too. Here’s what you’ll want to look for while you configure your new Outback:

  • Trailer Hitch: 270-pound tongue weight and 2,700-pound towing capacity for the 2.5L engine, 350-pound tongue weight and 3,500-pound towing capacity for the 2.4L turbocharged engine
  • Ball Mount: For when the ball mount needs to be replaced but the hitch casing is still working
  • Trailer Hitch Cap: Rubberized exterior-grade plastic with a UV-resistance polyurethane Subaru logo
