A Flood of Inventory & Opportunity

Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have caused massive destruction recently. Their impact will be felt for years to come by individuals, families, communities, economies, industries, governments and a nation that pulled together to help in a time of need. Often from these terrible catastrophes emerge unintended or unexpected bright moments and stories. For example, NFL player JJ Watt, a defensive end for the Houston Texans started a fundraiser for his city and initially had a conservative goal of $200,000. The donations came in at an unexpected rate and currently, his effort has raised $37 million and counting.

Another example of the often overlooked effects of catastrophes are the pets and animals that live in those affected areas. Due to Hurricane Harvey, many Texas animal shelters were becoming overcrowded and overburdened. Southwest Airlines stepped in and filled a plane full of cats and dogs and transported them to San Diego, CA where they could receive better care and ease the pressure being put on Texas shelters.

Like the animals affected by these storms, there are also hundreds of thousands of cars that are being impacted by these storms. These cars belong to both individual owners and dealerships. Think about all the car dealerships with row after row of new and used cars that have to ride out the storm and hope for the best. But, what happens when this many cars are in the line of fire of these storms? The answer is an unbelievable amount of paperwork for insurance companies.

Dealerships that experience flooding on their lots will have their entire inventory written off regardless of whether or not each car was individually flooded. What often happens is that there are high spots and low spots on these lots. Some cars are hit harder than others and what we often see is that some cars don’t get wet at all. It’s shocking to see how many cars are totaled or written off when water never breaches the interior of the car. However, due to the workload and overwhelming logistics of processing claims after a catastrophe decisions are made with broad sweeping strokes.

A former insurance adjuster told us the following when discussing catastrophic events,

Estimates indicate that there will be close to 1,000,000 vehicles totaled by these hurricanes and subsequent flooding. The good news is that AutoSavvy will be handpicking 1,000 – 2,000 of these vehicles. That’s a fraction of a percentage of the vehicles impacted by these storms and we are working feverishly to make sure that the inventory we secure is the best of the best.

These cars will be put through our inspection process and reconditioned as needed. They will then be sold to the public, with their branded title status at significant savings, up to 30% below clean title from where they were recently listed prior to the storms.
