Under the Motor Vehicle Act, the State of Utah defines a branded title vehicle as a salvage title model that has been: “Damaged by collision, flood, or other occurrences to the extent that the cost of repairing the vehicle for safe operation exceeds its fair market value; or a vehicle that has been declared a salvage vehicle by an insurer or other state or jurisdiction, but is not precluded from further registration and titling.”
Now that you know what a branded title in Utah is, take note that branded title vehicles in Utah include both salvage titles and rebuilt titles. If you restore a salvage title vehicle to excellent condition and have it retitled as rebuilt, that branded title will still appear in its vehicle history. That says nothing about the quality of rebuilt title vehicles, however. For instance, you cannot register a salvage title in the state of Utah, but a rebuilt title vehicle can be registered!
To have your salvage title vehicle retitled as being rebuilt, you will need to repair your vehicle and refurbish it with new parts where needed. Most people should leave this job to a licensed mechanic. You’ll then need to bring your salvage title certificate and a $6 application fee to your local DMV. Your vehicle will then undergo an extensive inspection, which can range in price from $14 to $40. Once the inspectors have deemed that your vehicle is road-legal, they’ll re-certify it as a rebuilt title vehicle.
At AutoSavvy, we find salvage title vehicles that are cost-effective to restore. We then have them retitled at the DMV as rebuilt title vehicles. These vehicles are far more affordable than conventionally used cars, but they’ve undergone a much deeper inspection and rehabilitation process at the hands of passionate restorationists. That is to say, you’re getting a used car that has been more rigorously inspected than the clean title vehicles you’ll find at other used car dealerships—and at a lower price.
On a final note, we’d like to stress that AutoSavvy is in a unique position to have the infrastructure to create real value in the branded title market. We’re a rapidly expanding company with a national market, so it’s cost effective for us to restore salvage title vehicles into the truly reliable rebuilt title vehicles we sell. We can’t guarantee that the branded title vehicles for sale at non-specialist dealerships or from private sellers have the same quality. Our customers will be the first to tell you, however, that when you work with us, you really have stumbled upon a unique opportunity to save!
